Happy Birthday, indeed. And despite the reputations of the authors on this forum - I'd remind readers that David Crockett in Congress: the Rise and Fall of the Poor Man's Friend is available through the usual sites for preorder. Having been lucky enough to read an early prepublication version, if you're truly interested in the historical Crockett this is a must have book to own, and it is an insight into how Crockett saw himself. The book is sure to bring some controversy as the authors have found evidence in Crockett's own words that over turn some of the main theories in previously published histories and promoted by some of the talking heads on the History Channel!

I also am marking the Tennessean's birthday and reflecting on the common images of him, which often have distorted or misrepresented who he really was.
Jim and I believe that the book will not disappoint anyone regarding Crockett's character and conduct; quite the opposite, in fact. He is, as we've always thought of him, a true hero with strong convictions, who stood up for them regardless of consequences, and with a deck heavily stacked against him.
When you spend this much time with a person you've respected and admired from childhood, there is always a fear that you will find them to be something less than you thought, but that was (happily) not the case with Crockett at all. I came away from the work with a far greater respect for this man than I'd had before, and I respected him quite a lot to begin with. I think that readers of our book will feel the same.

Glad to hear it; I'm still hoping to get out to his winery in Los Olivos again.
