I stumbled on this old "made for TV" movie yesterday, while flipping through the cable channels. Good god, almighty! I'll take the flaws in both the Waynamo and the 2004 Alamo films before this mess.
I mean -- there were some -- a very -- parts that were pretty good. But for the most part, this flick was a pure flight of fantasy. The final assault scene is a case in point. The initial pre-dawn attack was okay -- I thought, "Hey they got this right." But then, the defenders beat them back to total retreat, allowing Santa Anna time to tongue lash his colonels so they could go back (now in broad daytlight, some hours later, and try it again. Huh?
Oh, man, this was horrible.
BTW -- did they film this at Alamo Village? Looks like they did.

It was filmed at Alamo Village: oddly enough they were preping for filming while many of us were there filming Houston: The Legend of Texas or as it is also known, Gone to Texas. While we were about 10 miles away filming San Jacinto, they were filming their version of the Alamo at Alamo Village. If Lon Tinkle disliked James Edward Grant's screenplay of the Wayne film, what do you think he would have thought of this one?

It's a "funny" movie so much wrong with it, yet they got a few things right that the others missed. And as bad as the miscasting of Greene, Keith, and Arness was, Baldwin and Julia are probably the best Travis and Santa Anna yet - it's just a shame they didn't have good material to work with!

I agree about Baldwin and Julia. Too bad the script was so terrible. If I was casting Santa Anna now, I'd probably opt for Benicio del Toro. Jim

I liked Julia and Baldwin in this as far as casting. del Toro as Santa Anna would be interesting-just wish they would get the remake of the Wolfman out!

I have to go against everyone on this one. I believe "13 Days To Glory" was the one that got it right. You have to keep in mind it was for television, which means less money and time for filming. The casting was good (Travis, Crockett) or better (Bowie, Santa Anna, Houston) and they were close to the real ages of the characters on film. The history was better than the 2004 film and was more of a straight forward story. It's not the epic of Wayne's film, however to me, it ties for second place along with "The Last Command". One last note on casting, I believe James Garner would have been a terrific Crockett in this one.

P.S. Which cable channel was it on? I like to see it again.
