Anyone into John Coltrane? I'm a stranger there myself, but just downloaded a 6-song EP from iTunes with Coltrane playing and Johnny Hartman singing. I was led to this after hearing their version of "My One and Only Love" played on "Cold Case" a few weeks ago. A terrific recording of a great song. I wonder if all of Coltrane's stuff was this romantic?
In fact, there are websites devoted just to the music played on "Cold Case," which is quite extensive and interesting.

NO on that one, Allen. I'm a big Coltrane fan, and his later stuff is very outside and experimental. I like his whole catalog, but a lot of his stuff can be intense listening. The record with Hartmann is one Coltrane's most accessible. If you want to step into the deeper Coltrane catalog, I'd recommend the albums "My Favorite Things," and "Giant Steps" as your next purchases. They're a little edgier than the Hartmann title, but not as dense as some of his later works. My all time favorite Coltrane album (and, in my opinion, one of the top 5 albums of all time) is "A Love Supreme," a breathtaking piece of music and a monumental accomplishment. Coltrane is one of the few musicians who really merit the "genius" label. He took music about as far as it can be taken but, even at his most atonal, his music is always filled with emotion and soul. I used to be intensely into him when I was in high school, especially his albums on the Impulse! label. The ensemble playing he did with Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderly on Miles' "Kind of Blue" hasn't been beaten, and that's an album I could never tire of. Trane still amazes me, and "A Love Supreme" and "Blue Train" remain favorites. There's some good live footage of him on Youtube worth seeking.
I know where I can get "The Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings" for pretty cheap and am thinking about snagging it; do you recommend that one, Jim?

Since you're already a fan, yes, I'd recommend it. I picked it up used a while back. It's a nice 4 CD package. It might seem a little repetitive to a new listener though.
I'll echo your recommendation for "Kind of Blue" as well. An amazing record from a legendary ensemble.
FYI, Derek Trucks just issued a live EP, "Already Live," that's available only in independent record stores. I picked it up last week at Waterloo in Austin. He does a 17 minute take on Coltrane's version of "My Favorite Things" that you should hear.

You've really piqued my interest and I'm going to go look for this stuff. By the way, Jim, I dug out that Dion CD you mentioned a while back and put it on my iPod - better than I rememeberd.

Allen, you might also check out some of the Coltrane titles on the Prestige label. They're some of his earlier work, but if you like the Hartman, you'd probably enjoy them. Jim

You know, I've been playing music (mostly blues-infused guitar) for something like 45 years and sad to say, I'm only "aware" of Coltrane, have not really listened to him. You guys have gotten my interest up, so I guess I'll do some YouTube cruising in a few moments. I know his work with Miles has long been a stand-out and highly respected.
