As a very minor contributor to Jim and Allen's book, I want to briefly share some unsolicited thoughts about what these two men have accomplished. During the holidays I had the opportunity to go over it cover to cover at least twice and examine the intricacies with a critical 'Crockett' eye. In a word: WOW! The book is impressive in many ways --- physically, it is hefty, solid, and very well designed. The volume of historical documents is second to none, and the writing is excellent. In fact, both Jim and Allen are perfect co-authors because they seamlessly thread their styles, knowledge, and keen insight as one writer. This is quite amazing. Even more, these two really know their subject extremely well and this book will establish itself as one of the most important books ever written on David Crockett. So, I recommend the following: 1) make sure you have a copy for yourself because whether or not you are interested in Crockett, the valuable information about language, the political period, and the national mindset will be quite helpful in understanding what led to that fateful trip to the Alamo, and 2) purchase another copy for your local school or library because our public has little or no understanding as to what these vanishing figures of our past are all about. Living in a nation that is obsessed with the likes of Britney Spears, Tiger Woods, and American Idol, that alone would make a terrific gift on your behalf. Congratulations, Jim & Allen! GLF

Thank you Gary! That is very high praise, indeed, espeically from someone who has spent as much time as you have with the historical Crockett and the literature! Much appreciated!

A fun footnote to the C-SPAN Book TV session on David Crockett in Congress:
During TV and radio interviews for Music of the Alamo, Allen's last name would be pronounced different ways: either Why-ner or Wee-ner (and I certainly know the experience of having a last name mispronounced). As the moderator of the panel for Allen and Jim's book, I asked Allen on the day of the taping how would he want me to pronounce his name. Allen instructed me to pronounce it Why-ner. Got it. Of course, he also provided me with some exact things to say. No way were any mistakes going to be made on this C-SPAN event. So, the cameras roll and I state his last name: Why-ner. Moments later, Allen says: "I'm Allen Wee-ner."
Help!
BTW: They delivered an interesting, fact-filled and enjoyable presentation. Enjoy.

Cringe!! Yes, Bill, I recall doing that, which shows the rapidly deteriorating state of my mind. Fortunately, I managed not to screw up anything else that day! Did I at least buy you a beer afterward?
Hope you all get to tune in (1:30 p.m. EST today; repeated in the middle of the night at 3:30 a.m.). It should become available on the CSPAN Book TV website archive in the near future too (http://www.c-spanvideo.org/videoLibrary).

Did I at least buy you a beer afterward? Allen Since they edited the intro out, no one will ever know! And because of that, you don't have to buy me the beer.

I was sorry to see they'd edited Bill C's intro. For those who weren't there, he did some serious plate spinning, then followed up by juggling chain saws and bowling balls, all the while reciting Crockett's speech on Indian Removal. A hard act to follow!
