Widmark seemed to be one of those actors who was always basically playing himself. If I'm not mistaken, he even wore the same hat in all, or most of his Westerns. Note the hat he wears in "Alvarez Kelly," which looks suspiciously like the one he wore in "The Alamo." I'd have to review his other Westerns to see if they all featured the same hat, but my guess would be , probably so. His mannersims were very similar from film to film, such as the way he'd say "uh-uh," (with the emphasis on the second "uh.")when replying in the negative. One exception is when Wayne (in the Alamo) says to him: "You're not much of one for this forgive and forget business, are ya Jim" to which Widmark replies "NO." But my all time favorite Widmark film is and always will be, "The Bedford Incident." Tense, gripping and chilling cold war drama on the high seas. Mark

"The Bedford Incident" is terrific; he did a couple of good films with Poitier. A couple of his lesser-known flicks are "When the Legends Die" and the TV film "A Whale for the Killing." I also liked him in "Murder on the Orient Express." Yeah - a lot of those guys basically got paid big bucks for playing themselves because that's what brought folks to the box office. But I've read that Widmark was a better actor than that and got great reviews on Broadway.
Some friends and I had a running joke about certain film stars always wearing the same, or similar hats. Widmark certainly wore either the same one in several films or at least similar hats. James Stewart was another one; we'd refer to "James Stewart's hat," or "Richard Widmark's hat." Wayne had that one hat for years; I think the one he wore in Rio Bravo, although I'm not sure if the front of the brim was always turned up like that. Didn't Yul Brynner wear his "Magificent Seven" hat in "Invitation to a Gunfighter"? He wore the whole costume in "Westworld" and the "Mag. 7" sequels.
