I'm currently reading "The Shawnees and the War for America", by Colin Callaway and, while doing some further reading on Tecumseh, I keep coming across references to Allen Eckert's "The Frontiersman". This book is reportedly about Simon Kenton and Tecumseh. I've seen Eckert's books around a lot over the years but haven't ever picked any of them up. Are they worth a look? Jim

Eckert's books are well worth reading. I read my first one, The Frontiersman, when it came out around 1967, and particularly liked The Wilderness War, which concerned the American Revolution in my neck of the woods. Although his books read like fiction, he based them on deep research. He knew what he was writing about.

All an Eckert's a fantastic author and historian, especially if you have relations that lived in the Midwest early in this country's history. I discovered his books in high school. I've read the Frontiersman, A Sorrow in our Heart and the Court Martial of Danny Boone. I can't remember the other titles. Just pick one and you will enjoy it. Here's his website: www.allaneck.com/

Thanks for the link. Interesting guy, and I'm looking forward to digging in to "The Frontiersman". I always thought these books were romanticized historical fiction...it's good to hear otherwise. Jim

I always thought these books were romanticized historical fiction Nothing romanticized about Eckert's books; more like gritty realism. Think I'll dig out one of the ones I haven't read and treat myself if/when things slow down.

Jim Your welcome Alamo. Eckert's books have a lot meat on their spines and definately are not frontier melodrama. Hope you enoy them.
