The December issue of The Alamo Journal has been mailed to all Alamo Society members worldwide.
Issue #167 features important updated news provided by Colorado’s Glenn Effler regarding the fight for Alamo Plaza – and additional information about what Alamo Society members can do to help restore the historic site to a place of dignity and importance.
Preliminary information about The Alamo Society 2013 Symposium is included in this issue. The symposium will coincide with the scheduled rare display of William B. Travis’ famous “Victory or Death” letter at the Alamo.
Texas’ Dr. John G. Deaton examined Travis’ famous letter and shares detailed information about it in “Victory or Death.”
Ohio’s Ashley Ward updates the film-print status of John Wayne’s The Alamo.
New Jersey’s Charles P. Riddle offers “Massacred at Goliad – Joseph P. Riddle.”
Phil Collins recalls his Texas book tour for The Alamo and Beyond: A Collector’s Journey.
There's also several pages of "Alamo News" and other articles in the issue.

Got mine today, Bill. Once again, it's another interesting issue, but also depressing, given the current state of the Wayne "Alamo" and the (San Antonio) city's myopic view of how to fix the travesty that i Alamo Plaza. For those of us a bit removed by distance from San Antonio and the Alamo, these sorts of reports are the only way we can keep informed.
Remember the Alamo. Save Alamo Plaza.

I'm not sure this article comports with what I've read at the following link, which I've posted before. On that website, Robert Harris makes it sound more like no one wants to put the money or time into restoring the film, but it could be done if anyone had the will to do it. www.hometheaterforum.com/t/283892....oring-the-alamo

Ashley has provide a lamentable but very precise and knowlegeable article about the demise of the original material for John Wayne's The Alamo. What is most astounding about United Artists' mis-handling of the material is the totality of the loss. The Hollywood lab and printing process of the day was designed to assure that backup elements (in the form of protection negatives, separation postitives, and the like) were created "for protection." The original camera negative of a movie is always given the kind of care and protection that can only be likened to the archival protection of the Travis letter. The goal would have been, and in fact was, to cover for any possible loss and damage. Instead, United Artists has succeeded in surpassing all fail-safes and has thus rendered the film "lost" in any way other than home video versions.

That seems to be the conclusion I'm reaching from the discussion thread on "The Home Theater" forum. Robert Harris, who has been pushing for a full restoration for a long time, and has restored several classic films himself, is a participant and pretty much reaches the same conclusion as Rich does. At this point, I'm glad to have the old VHS two-cassette, so called "Director's Cut" edition, which I have dubbed onto DVD-R so that, unlike the Hollywood doofuses in this sorry tale, I'll have a backup digital copy. I understand that the same version is on the old laser disc edition and is the same version that TCM was showing up to a couple of years ago. As shocking as it may be, if Frank Thompson does a new edition of "Alamo Movies" someday, you may find him listing "The Alamo" with other "lost" Alamo films.
