Calm down Allen. With the pennany race this tight, we'll have nothing but sleepless nights until October. As far as the Yankee slide is going, what a mess. These guys stand at the plate with RISP and watch the ball go by three time and then seem bewildered that they struck out. Now, last night they won with some luck and small ball. But will they continue? I doubt it because they only know to swing for the fences and even the least talented pitchers know how to humiliate them. ARRGH!!!! The O's are doing it with "pluck." The Nats seem to do it with talent. Who knows?

O's are stomping the Yanks right now, but still 3 innings to go. Yanks do appear to be in a slump, but the O's looked like they were done a few weeks ago; now, look at 'em. Honestly - I now believe the Nats are a magical, Cinderella team. It may well be their year. But, with the post-season crap shoot, anything is possible. Let's relish the excitement that may well be in store for us the next few weeks!

Well, gents, off hand I'd say we have the potential for one helluva pennant race down the stretch here! The Os squeeked past N.Y. in a real nail-biter today; tomorrow is game 4 of the series with the Yanks and I'm looking forward to another exciting 9 innings. Then the Os host the Rays, another major challenge. Meanwhile, the Nats pulled yet another rabbit out of their hats today, which is getting to be so common with them that fans are beginning to expect it! I can't believe I'm witnessing this! If anyone had predicted we'd be seeing this a year ago, they would have been laughed out of town. Yet, here we are. Let's hope the ride to October remains this sweet!

September 8th. Yanks 4, O's 5. We wuz robbed!!! Curses on you first base umpire. We're taking up a collection for a "white tipped cane and a seeing eye dog." Actually, CC lost the game for us much earlier. When are Yankee pitchers going to learn not to pitch Reynolds inside over the plate Double ARRRGH!!! Lou from Long Island (nail biting stomach churning Yankee fan)

I must sheepishly offer the only reply I ever find useful in such cases: "That's baseball." Well, with Baseball, it's kind of like Anne of Green Gables old motto: "Every day is brand new, with no mistakes in it." At least, no mistakes --- yet!

I hope the BoSox play spoiler and somehow, through some miracle, beat the stuffing out of the Yankees in the upcoming series. Why? So the O's have a chance to open up a real lead over the Yanks. Other than this series with New York, I think the Red Sox should seriously consider forfeiting all games remaining in the final three weeks of this season. I mean, they'll probably lose them anyway, so why not simply forfeit them all and skip the drama. The outcome will be pretty much the same.

Paul - someone up there heard you; the Sox definitely looked like the old Sox last night in edging the Yanks in a tense nail-biter! Meanwhile, the Os more than handled the Rays and we have a tie in the AL East again. As I said - fasten your seatbelts; we could be in for a humdinger of a finish this year! Meanwhile -- has anyone noticed that no one is paying much attention to the Cincinnati Reds? Somehow, they have not lit the media fire that the Nats have, yet they are walking away with their division and have baseball's second best record! They could win it all. Why does that not enthuse me? Could I be fixated on the dream of a Beltway Series? ?

Well, I see the Dead Sox have failed once again to even play the role of spoiler this year. The more I see of them, the more I agree with your point about their total inability to play small ball. They had opportunities to score tonight, but each time they simply swung for the fences --- and failed. They seem to have not heard of the bunt, the hit-and-run, the steal, etc. Not once did they succeed in moving the runners along. Meanwhile, the Os are still tied with the Yanks, thanks only to a 14-inning squeeker this afternoon over the Rays. I hope the Rays can do more than the Sox did when they meet the Yanks tomorrow.
THe Os, of course, will be in Oakland tomorrow. May I ask what idiot made up this ridiculous schedule? Why is are an AL East and AL West team playing at this point in the season? At this point, teams should be playing their own competitors in their own divisions. Oakland should be playing other teams in their division as shold the Os. This also creates the need for cross-country travel that does not help teams that are tired and stressed enough as the pennant races reach their peaks.

>:(You got your wish. The Rays did more than the Bosox did to the Yanks. Last night the Yanks gave a group effort to do just enough to lose. How did the O's do on the left coast? I'm too feklempt to look it up. AARRRGH!!!!

Orioles blew a golden opportunity by losing to Oakland 3-2. No breathing room for either team and it's still a 3-way race; two wild card slots on the line as well -- and only 2 1/2 weeks to go!!! Hang on!!

The Orioles have overachieved the entire season. Case in point: Baltimore has a W-L record of 81-63 and a Pythagorean record of 70-74.
Pythagorean winning percentage is an estimate of a team's winning percentage given their runs scored and runs allowed. Developed by Bill James, it can tell you when teams were a bit lucky or unlucky. So Baltimore has been EXTREMELY lucky. I'm hoping they continue that string of luck for a bit longer. Go O's!

It has felt like they were playing over their heads and not long ago I thought they'd faded, but they bounced back. I think someone on the post game show the other day pointed out this stat, but said they had done much better in the past month. I wonder how St. Louis would have measured up on that stat at this point last year.

That Pythagorean record is interesting. To analyticals it must be heaven sent. I thought BB was a game of inches, but it's so much a game of people. Just when you think someone is washed up (like Swisher and Granderson), Ivan Nova and Joba Chamberlain come through. Of course, Jeter always leaves it all on the field. Up and down, that's the season as we predicted even with a 10 game lead. Also, errors. I've never seen so many on every team so late in the season. And with RISP, they all stink!!! The tension in the dugouts must be awful.
I'm glad I can wallow in football today. Let's see how the Jets do against a real team. And let's see if the Giants/Dallas loss was a fluke. Also, may the Lord help me remember the first four games of a football season mean virtually nothing to the playoffs. Too early for predictions, but watch 49ers and Ravens.
