That's a lucide summary of the BB season so far. I'm in full agreement. But the three games the Yanks play against the O's starting tonight could be crucial for both teams. This 7 of 10 losing streak in very un-Yankee and I suspect the key problem is the inability to score against mediocre pitchers until late in the game when it's too late. You can't believe how aggravating it is to lose against Boston and the A's in the last innings. I hope Ichiro is the answer, but he has to get on base for him to do his magic. My #1 fear is that the Yanks will win a number of games and fail in the playoffs because they leave 10+ RISP in each game. ARRGH!!! And this is not a problem the Yankees can buy themselves out of. PS: Is it just me, or do the Olympics suck as much as I think they do? Lou from Long Island

I'm still betting the Yanks have no worries up to the playoffs. After that, who knows? I'm leaning toward Paul's optimism regarding the Rangers; it may be their year and, after all, third time is the charm, right?
As to the Olympics, if I confine my viewing to the women's beach volleyball and Michelle Jenneke warming up for her run at the hurdles, it's not really that bad.
Correction: Michelle Jenneke is not competing in this year's Olympics, although the thinking is that she will compete in 2016. The now-viral video of her winning a hurdles race is from an earlier competition.

Hey, Lou - What the deuce is going on up there? Two in a row for the Os??? I sure didn't see that coming & had expected the Yankees to put the Birds away. I guess it's stll a race after all.

Allen - at least the Yanks managed to salvage game three. As my sainted Father in law used to yell, "Why the hell don't they save some of those runs for the close games?"
I totally agree with you about the beach volleball. (female only) It's not the competitions, it's the eternal commercials, commentary and back ground that bores me to death. Fortunately, TCM had a John Wayne marathon today, so I didn't have to suffer through male or female Fencing. They're not exactly Errol Flynn. Still, there's two hours of commentary for every 2 minutes of competition.

I have often echoed your father-in-law's cry; 10 runs one day, when they only need 2, and none the next day, when 2 might have won it. The Os have lapsed into their old pattern of being sporadic. They are great one day and go to pieces the next. Today they had 13 hits and only 3 runs to show for that, one run coming on a homer, so the other 12 added up to a paltry 2 runs. They Yanks had 15 hits, but showed 12 runs for them. In short, what often counts is hitting when hitting brings a payoff; when a hit means the most. Oh, well, in baseball all is new again the next day -- until you run out of next days. Kind of like life! Maybe that's why we never lose our facination with the game.

Ditto, Ditto Allen Since August 1st, the Yankees had a real slump on their hands and no relief in sight. Then Suzuki came along and Gerardi had the wisdon to flip Swisher and Granderson and feature Chavez more. I think the swagger may be back. Yesterday in Detroit they won a game they usually blow. Still, the O's keep narrowing the gap. What a great pennant race we're finally having!

What a great pennant race we're finally having! Amen, and especially with the Red Sox becoming every other team's salvation and whipping boy. They can't even beat the lowly Indians. I'm still pulling for the Rangers, of course ... but I'd love to see the Nationals make it, too. That's about all that's keeping me interested in baseball at this point. Paul

I'd like to think the Orioles will make a race of it and we'd have a season-ender like last year, but somehow I don't see it happening. A decade or so ago, the Os would be the toast of the town and everyone would regard this as an amazing comeback season for them; a true raising from the dead. But because the Nats have so captivated the folks around here, the Os achievements are largely going unnoticed. After all, it IS pretty hard not to get excited about this team! I really hope they make it all the way; they really remind me of the 1969 Mets, so stay tuned!

It's Aug. 17th...We just took three out of four against the Rangers and just started to play Boston. I gotta say, GM Cashman is a genius and I'm beginning to feel "who needs A-Rod?" Cash is masterfully filling in the gaps caused by injury with just the right people at just the right price. Don't the Mets wish they could do the same instead of giving up? NY fans can't and won't stomach that. I didn't mind Boston giving the O's a hard time. Gotta love this season!!!!

Yeah, Lou; I'm sure that YOU love it! I think that Texas series was a preview of the ALCS, with the same result! However, I'm beginnng to see the image in my crystal ball slowly clear and I see the Nats doing to the Yanks what the Mets did to the Os in 1969; It's that kind of year!

I know this is off topic and I know it's only early pre-season, but could the Jets look any more pathetic then they did last night? Even though I'm a Giants fan, I try to support the Jets as another New York Team (except Buffalo.) But they continue to try to contend in the NFL with smoke and mirrors and media manipulation. As I said about most of the post-Namath teams, it appears a terrible stench has settled upon the green machine. GO GIANTS!!!

The last time anyone around here had this kind of pennant race excitement was during the Earl Weaver era in Baltimore - nearly 30 years ago. Here's hoping the party never ends and Washington has its first world title in generations! P.S. I know I'm getting way ahead of myself here, but as long as I'm at it, I'll glance into my crystal ball and see the Nats maybe facing the Texas Rangers in the World Series. Hmmmmm. Aren't the Rangers the team that was once one of two Washington Senators teams that abandoned the city for points west? Is revenge not on the menu here? But, wait -- what would Montreal have to say about that re: the Nats and one-time Expos? Ah, who cares! Montreal has no team to seek vengence! Heh, heh, heh. October, here we come!

Allen---I feel your enthusiasm. This could be the year of the Nats. Good Luck and Best Regards. Short History - Great Glory! By the way, I saw an Expos game in Montreal three days before 9/11. They practically had to give tickets away. I walked up to the ticket window and got box seats on the first base line for my wife and I for $32. After the game they gave away free pizza. What a shame, those Canadians couldn't support baseball. They considered it an invasion against the Hockey they worship. Montreal is a beautiful city, just doen't bring up Baseball. I'm glad they came home and became contenders as the Nats.

You and I both, Lou! Toronto seems more receptive to baseball. Ironically, IIRC, Montreal had an active minor league club ages ago where Jackie Robinson & other future major leaguers cut their teeth. I was at a game in Toronto in 1977, the first year the Jays played there, when they were still in a glorified high school stadium. Stan Musial was there and they introduced him on the loudspeaker; he stood up in the press box and waved a the crowd. No one seemed to know who he was! A guy sitting next to me said, out loud, "who is he?" Weird.

What's this? What's THIS? ? O's now tied with Yanks for first, with the Rays nipping at their heels? Do I hear sounds of an exciting September in the air? Could we have as exciting a pennant race and post season as 2011 offered? Let's hope so!! Oh, and the inevitable Beltway Series I predicted back in May, of course!
