Steve Cropper and Felix Cavaliere have a new album out called "Nudge It Up A Notch" that's worth a listen. Great vocals from Felix and the usual succinct and spicy guitar licks from Steve. Good songs too, especially if you're old school like me! And it's on the Stax label, which should tell you something...
Also out today, the new B.B. King album, "One Kind Favor". What makes this one especially interesting is that B.B. is teamed up with producer T Bone Burnett and a small group of killer musicians: Jim Keltner on drums, Nathan East on bass, and Dr. John on keys. How's that for a band? I'm headed out today to pick this one up.

I'll check out the Cropper/Cavaliere album. Felix is great, and Steve Cropper can do no wrong. I heard about the new BB album a couple of hours after I sent out a big order for cds to Amazon last week. I'm dying to hear it. It's interesting, his pick for the title track. I was reading a book, The B.B. King Companion, the other day, and there's an interview in there from many years ago where he talks about that very song in some depth.

Speaking of new albums, has anybody had a listen to Buddy Guy's new one, "Skin Deep," yet? It's been sitting on my counter, unlistened to for lack of time, for a few weeks.

I haven't picked up the Buddy Guy yet. I bought the B.B. today and gave it a listen in the car. It's a good one. I like the fact that it's a B.B. King album, not an album of guest stars. King is front and center on every cut, and T Bone did a good job with song selection. There is a horn section on some of the cuts, and the core band as listed above, but this is really all about B.B. T Bone is one of my favorite producers because he has an encyclopedic knowledge of roots music and he's not afraid to let the songs stand on their own without a lot of trappings. He did a great job about 20 years ago on a Willie Dixon album called "Hidden Charms". I'm glad to see him working with some of these guys that people have overproduced in the past. I'd love to hear him record Bobby Bland. Jim

I'll have to check out Buddy's new CD for sure. I saw him a few years back and he was amazing.

I ordered the BB King "One Kind Favor" cd from Amazon yesterday, although they're listing it as out of stock, with no expected restock date yet. I suspect it's because this thing is currently ranked #15 in all Amazon music sales, and Geffen can't press them fast enough. This one may be a huge seller for BB.

It's the best record he's made in a long time. No filler.
