Okay, jook afficionados: What are the first 15 songs that come up when your iPod is on shuffle? Here's my list today:
Doctor My Eyes: Jackson Browne Whole Lotta Love: Led Zeppelin Little Bluebird: Little Milton Why Don't We Do It In the Road: Beatles Tangled Up in Blue: Bob Dylan Holes To Heaven: Jack Johnson Papa's Got A Brand New Bag: James Brown In the Wee Small Hours: Junior Wells Clubland: Elvis Costello On My Way: Mavis Staples All Wrong: Morphine Bubblehouse: Medeski, Martin and Wood Back in the USSR: Beatles Red Door: Joe Pass Giant: The Bad Plus
Just over 3400 songs and I get 2 Beatle songs on the first 15. I've made a few themed playlists, but most of the time I keep my iPod in shuffle mode. I like the random selection. This morning I got a Thelonius Monk cut followed by Johnny Cash. You gotta love it. Jim

Which version of "Let it Rock"? There was a cool version on a Stones bootleg back in the day. Dave Edmunds has a version that ain't too shabby either. Love "Big Mouth Blues" too! Jim

It's the live version (I think from '70 or '71) on the "Rarities" album (a real misnomer; not many real rarities on that cd.) Bobby Keyes and Jim Price are on horns.
Dave Edmunds is something else! I was fortunate to see him with the late, lamented Rockpile in 1980. I'll have to dig into the vault and see if I have his version of Let it Rock.

I think it was on an album called "Subtle As A Flying Mallet", mid-70's, pre-Rockpile. I've seen Edmunds a number of times, with Rockpile and in Ringo's band. Rockpile was one of the great bands. I did a session in Nashville with Billy Bremner years ago. What a thrill! Jim

Billy Bremner still has a thriving career going on, in Scandinavia, last I heard. He cut a really fine single around the time Rockpile broke up, titled "Shatterproof." Elvis Costello later covered it.
Better get yourself an Ipod, Mark; it's amazing the quality of sound you get out of one of those little things through good earphones. (Can't say I care much, though, for Ipod-based home stereos; they're sure killing off the component stereo.)

Most of the music I buy is on CD, which I rip to my hard drive and dump on the iPod. A strictly electronic format doesn't do it for me. I like to look at liner notes, etc. Heck, I still miss LPs. I don't think CDs ever captured the same aesthetic as the 12 inch album package. I got an 80 gig iPod Classic for Christmas this year, which I love. It's great to be able to carry a ton of music with me as much as I travel. The new iPods show video as well, so I can dump a couple of movies on the device and I'm all set for a cross country flight. I'm working in Hong Kong in July, which I hear is an 18 hour flight...I'm loading a lot of music for that one! Jim
