He's a superb historian and a generous one, who has cut me a couple of personal favors over the years.

I've only read Utley's two ranger books, but I hear he's kind of good on other subjects.

His biography of Sitting Bull, "The Lance and the Shield," is a genuine classic; a must read for anyone interested in that era.

As someone who worked briefly with Robert Utley I assure you he is brilliant on every subject he tackles. He respects history, and he researches and writes with meticulous care and true objectivity. Reading his books will teach you more about how to evaluate and interpret evidence than you can learn anywhere else. Read all his books, and keep them in your library for future reference. I have not seen him in a long time, but I understand he is working on Geronimo now.

I found his article "The Frontier Army: John Ford or Arthur Penn?" in "Indian-White Relations: A Persistent Paradox" (Edited by Jane F. Smith and Robert M. Kvasnicka) very useful when I was writing my MA thesis on Hollywood's treatment of the American Indians.
