I have heard of other, military-related examples, but don't know how well-documented they are. Having been in the army and read a lot of military history, it appears to me that there are a few parallel lines with this particular event, although some were in a different context. As a soldier, I was always being ordered to fall in line, toe the line, etc. and the word line is almost synonymous with the infantry's organizations. Historically, the Spartan King Leonidas supposedly drew a line in the sand at Thermopylae. A few hundred years later, Roman envoy Popillius Laenas scratched his famous line in the sand to stop a war, so there might be other instances in the classical or modern world. Maybe one of these incidents inspired Old Ben Milam, Buck Travis or the originator (Rose, Zuber or another) of the Alamo line. The sands of time and the lack of a contemporary source have simply made this tale a bit murky. * spelling correction
