Boy, they never tire of using, reformatting, and misrepresenting Crockett for various political ends. This is a serious misrepresentation of Crockett, aside from the many typos I spotted. I have no idea about the article's veracity re: Hillary Clinton, but the comparison to Crockett is both strained and politically driven to make an anti-Clinton statement.

Another regurgitation of the "Whigs invented Crockett" myth. I wish somebody would write a book that tells the real story.

It's an old article, but I thought you guys would get a kick out of it. I'm glad nobody got rowdy enough to get escorted outta the room by Secret Service or the Racoon Whig Wearers.

What a difference 2 years can make. Gotta turn in now; getting ready for the dreadful journey to the land of wine, pizza and old statues with SWMBO on Tuesday. If I take enough Xanax on the plane, I might dream up a Crockett political bio myself!

Ahhhh! I loved Italia, especially Venice and Rome. Nothing to kvetch about, but the insane Euro-peon drivers and their tiny zippy cars.

Please don't tell me that! We're going to Rome, Venice & Florence, then renting a car and roaming the Tuscan countryside, leaving all hope behind. I've heard the drivers are insane, but that if you stay to the right on the main highways, it's OK. They average 80+ MPH and have one of the highest highway fatality rates in the world (if not THE highest).
My last post got dropped! I'm so worn out, I probably forgot to click the "post" button. I had said that I was not at all sure that we were allowed to say "kvetching," but glad to see that we are. And I will certainly consider Tom's Crown Royal option (but will probably screw that up, too, and order Royal Crown!

Sorry Allen. I havn't been there for 20 years, so maybe Italian traffic has improved. The craziest stuff I saw was in Naples, but luckily I was safe on a tour bus. Little cars and Vespas were speeding around each other trying to get pole positions. They seemed to have no regard for traffic lights/ signs or even pedestrians that got in the way. I've never seen anything like it and pray you don't see it at all. Have a good time, but you do have to be real careful in those parts o' the world.

Allen, not to add to your stress level, but please be on special guard against pickpockets. Roxy traveled around Italy a couple of years ago, and she found that in Florence they were particularly rampant and very ingenious in their methods. (She wasn't a victim, however.)

Tom,
We downloaded the State Department advisory on Italy, which has a long section on pickpockets and how serious the problem is in Italy. Rick Steves emphasizes it in his book on Italy too. This may sound like a joke, but it's not -- I actually watched "Harry in Your Pocket" to see how these people work. They're usually in teams, like in the movie; their MO is to do something to distract you while a partner picks your pocket. One might throw food on you, or spill a drink on you, another will "come to your assistance" and help you clean up, while a third partner picks your pocket. I've taken Steves' advice and bought a money belt; I'm leaving the wallet home and won't have anything in my pockets but spare change.
Thanks to all for the tips; just confirms my general dislike of travelling. I keep telling my wife that you can see all this stuff on TV!

Well, my Crockett-Clinton Comparison thread certainly veered off course, although it didn't have much of a life expectancy. Hey, maybe Allen should start a new thread detailing his travels through the former Roman Empire. He could post photographs of himself infront of old architecture with beautiful teenage and twenty- something girls. Hmm, he could call it, Allen's Roma Memories and have us all spellbound with web envy. Ugh! Nevermind. Allen's too mature and sensible for such displays.
