Thanks for posting, RR; I have to admit that I am unfamiliar with his work, but this tribute makes me want to look into it. RIP.

I can't praise Elmer Kelton enough. He's without a doubt my favorite fiction writer. He's historically accurate, with a writing style that's as comfortable as sitting in your favorite easy chair by a warm fire in the winter. And, while he may change a historical fact or two to make a better piece of fiction he was true to the spirit of the time.
A 7 time "Spur" winner for Western Fiction, he was named the best western writer of all time.
It's a sad day knowing there will be no more tales of the Calloway Brothers, etc.
If you've never read one his books, you can't go wrong with any that you pick up. But, the Good OldBoys is one of his finest. His series of Ranger Tales is outstanding, too.

Thanks. Kelton was a wonderful American, Texan and western author. He was only a friend of a friend, but I feel the loss of this man. Other Texas authors may have gotten more glory with high book sales and big movie deals, but few were as good as Ol' Elmer Kelton. He was working on another book when he died and never gave up.
