Rich, don't know about Crockett Street Bridge, though it sounds plausible, I do remember Jake Ivey telling me (during Mark Lemon's first tour) that the fountain coming out of the wall as you go down the steps at the SW corner marked the location of the "Cos" acequia and was meant to commemorate it. But, you probably already knew that .... Got to say again, I really like what you're doing! Oh! No. That one seems to have gotten by me. That's interesting. Never thought of that. It is in about the right place and Jake would certainly know the exact place. The only thing I'm wondering about the one along the river under the bridge is could it be that the acequia remains are still under Crockett Street but converted into a storm drain for Crockett and part of Losoya street. It would have been in the perfect place for that. Thanks again for the cheers.

I ran across this article about the Concepcion acequia. An interesting claim is that it was very wide--20 feet at the mouth and so large that the priests could use a boat on it. A curious thing is that Nelson's overview painting of Bexar shows no bridge over the acequia on the road that connects La Villita to the ford below the dam. I should thing that a bridge would be necessary if the Commerce street bridge could not accommodate wagons and the acequia was as wide as conjectured. Thoughts?

Has anyone ever got a chance to measure the parts of the Acequia Madre that still exist? Perhaps this would give a better indication of the average width overall of the Acequias. Thanks to the well informed Gents on here I've managed to see the part that is next to the Days Inn on Houston street plus the part that still exists where the old Playland Park meets Fort Sam Houston which was right were Appler's survey map indicated it should be. Beyond the parts at the Alamo, Hemisphere and the remnants on the south side these are the only parts that I know of.

I didn't know about the one in Playland Park. Is it accessible? I see it (I think) on Google Earth satellite, if you mean the north-south meandering part. That is right on the route I laid down from some of the old maps. If however you mean the very visible one in the satellite views that comes from the area behind the old officers' homes at Fort Sam and joins this one, I would bet on that being a drain trench created by the U.S. military at the fort at a much later date. That wouldn't be part of the Acequia Madre de Valero. It would have to be on the downhill slope to the west of the Madre to be one of the laterals.

A good reference for acequia dimensions can be found in the HAER reports in the Library of Congress. Link here.Scroll to find two reports: - Acequias of San Antonio, Hildebrand Avenue & Minita Creek, San Antonio, Bexar, TX
- Alamo Madre Acequia, East of Alamo Street, North of Durango Boulevard, San Antonio, Bexar, TX

Great source, Jim. However, I don't seem to be able to find a way to upload plats high quality enough to read labels. Am I missing something?

Rich,
The images are available in different resolutions.
1. Select the Acequias of San Antonio, Hildebrand Avenue & Minita Creek, San Antonio, Bexar, TX link 2. Click the Drawings Icon. You should now be presented with three plats to view. 3. Click first one for example: HAER TEX,15-SANT.V,4- (sheet 1 of 3) 4. In the description box above the image you will find links to higher res files: JPEG(110kb), JPEG(242kb), and TIFF(2mb). 5. Click the TIFF(2mb) for the highest resolution. This will download the file to your computer. On my computer TIFF files open in PhotoShop.

Thanks, Jim. I think I did go that far with an attempt but was thwarted at the "opening" stage, even though I have a limited (and old) version of PhotoShop. (Hey! I'm limited and old! lol) But I'll try again.

Well, I have tried to delete my Concepcion Dam and Pajalache model photos and just leave the text, since the forum has reached it's limits for adding attachments, but it just moved the photos from their place as illustrations in my text and put them at the bottom of the post where they were useless. I couldn't remove them without deleting posts, so I deleted them.

If you'll provide me the titles of the images you're ready to delete, I'll do so. I assume these are all in the acequia thread.

Didn't know you needed confirmation on these deletes or I would have paid more attention to where. Since I ended up deleting my whole message, as mentioned before, I thought it was done. So far they are the only ones I have deleted. I have also added a few successfully since then, in dialogue with Jim Broddie. Frankly, it is difficult to know what to cut. I have reviewed several threads and fond nothing that isn't integrally associated with the narrative. Deleting the pix would, in effect, lose the point of the message. You said that the alternative is a fee. Can you explain this further? Is it just for the person posting photos or something that would be assessed to all? If just for the poster, then let me know the details and how to submit it, and I might be able to assume that. Seems worth it for the historical information involved.

Rich, if it's just a case of your account being maxed out for additional graphics uploads (as opposed to the forum itself being maxed out), why not create an additional account under some form of your name, for purposes of posting graphics, which I'm sure Jim would approve of.

Thanks. That would be a great idea. Check with Jim, but I think the original error message said that it was indeed that the forum was at it's limit, not just my account.
