Texas history beginning with colonial Spain, then independent Mexico and independent Republic of Texas through Statehood is dominated by the single character of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna head and shoulders above the rest. On average political progression throughout Texas history was one of vendetta and most often violent execution of one leader by his successor or victor. The majority of the victors (who some call executioners past the point of victory) at San Jacinto called for the execution of Santa Anna only to be purportedly stayed by Gen. Houston. What was there about this single character Santa Anna that allowed him to escape the noose or firing squad to have fought more battles than Napoleon and George Washington combined, be eleven times President and Dictator of the second largest country in the world prior to 1836, to be captured by Texians at San Jacinto in 1836, and have presided over the eventual loss of half of Mexican territory to the US of the North, but released to become President and Dictator of Mexico 7 more times over 40 more years, periodically exiled from his country for a total of 20 years, have died unrecognized by the Juarez regime, penniless, senile and blind at the ripe old age of 82 in his beloved Mexico. This month Sons of DeWitt Colony Texas features Antonio López de Santa Anna
