Since this is tangentially related (filmed in part at the Dripping Springs set) I figured this was as good a location as any to ask...anyone seen this pic yet? The previews looked real good. Jim

I finally caught a matinee yesterday, and give the film the JB seal of approval. It's a fairly classic western. The characters owe a debt to McCrae and Call, and you've seen variations of the plot many times, but it still works. I enjoyed it. Jim

Viggo Mortenson did a wonderful job. I really enjoyed it. I find it to be more of a character study, than a sweeping epic. But I am glad to see the western genre coming back.

I agree about Viggo. IMHO, he perfectly captured in every detail, down to his haircut, facial hair, clothing, watch chain and fob, and even his gunfighting stance at the end of the film, the 1870's-1880's period "Western Type." Beautiful job of capturing the time period.

I havn't seen Appaloosa yet, but it looks like a good ol' fashion western. I've always liked Viggo, but especially in ballsy heroic roles. I'm glad they didn't attach one of those phoney "based on a true story" tag lines on it like they did with Viggo's movie, Hidalgo. It cheapened that film a little, when I discovered it was based on an old man's wild west and equestrian fantasies.

"Appaloosa" was a faithful adaptation of Robert B. Parker's novel. There's a sequel out called "Resolution" that's in my "to read" pile. The movie doesn't break a lot of new ground, but I found it appealing. It reminded me of "Lonesome Dove" and "Open Range". It's an adult western, for sure, but it doesn't have a whole lot of moral ambiguity like, say, "Unforgiven" or "Deadwood". You know who the good guys are, and their motivations aren't complicated.
