This doesn't quite fit because it was before the Texas Republic, but I thought it was interesting . . .
THE GAZETTE. BY H. B. STROTHER BELLEFONTAINE, OHIO, APRIL 20, 1832. VOL. II. NO. 9.
The New Orleans Courier contains a long detail of an engagement between a party of nine Americans and one hundred and sixty-four Towaconie Indians, in the Province of Texas, in November last. The Americans having been advised of the intended attack, prepared for defence [sic] on a small island in the St. Soha river, which was completely surrounded by the Indians, who kept up a heavy fire. Being driven back, an Indian crawled along and set fire to the leaves and grass windward of the encampment, which with much difficulty was extinguished with buffalo robes, deer skins, &c. The enemy were driven off, and the heroic little band, as in token of defiance, hoisted on the top of a tree a white flag with a bloody spot. The account says – “We had three white men severely wounded and one killed; and lost several horses. There was not one who had not his clothes pierced and skin grazed in several places. We saw twenty-one Indians fall dead on the ground; and the next morning, at their encampment, we counted 45 bloody spots on the grass, supposed to have been produced by the blood that ran from the bodies of the wounded.”

This doesn't quite fit because it was before the Texas Republic, but I thought it was interesting . . . Who sez it doesn't fit, Bob? I'd say an article that, although it doesn't mention him by name, is about James Bowie's fight with the Tawakonis at San Saba in November 1832 sure fits here. ("St. Soha" = San Saba)

Nice newspaper find and astute connection, but this fight was in November 1831, not 1832. An easy mistake.

No problem. I originally typed 1931 and had to go back and edit myself. Don't be too hard on your finger Tom as they're bound to stray once in awhile.
