I'm departing (driving) for San Antonio today, and will be in town from Late Sat night, until the following Sat (19th). If anyone out there'll be in the area during that period, and wants to get together, call me on my cell. Most of you have my number. Hope to see some of you there, Mark

I arrived back in GA yesterday after an eventful trip to SA. The Alamo was choked with tourists, and I only went inside once during a week-long visit. However, I was able to visit a dig on private property very near the Alamo, during which numerous Mexican buttons (including a beautiful officer's button) bits of cut horse shoes, as well as chopped bits of chain, several cannister projectiles, grapeshot, and a six-pounder Mexican bronze solid shot, which had been flattened on one side due to impact, were unearthed. Can't give the specifics yet, as the owner wants to keep things quiet for a while, but the things found here rival anything that has ever been dug relating to the Alamo battle. Meanwhile, the DRT continues to happily sell their Alamo thimbles, and key chains, choosing to leave a treasure trove of artifacts lying almost virtually under their feet.

That sure sounds like the stuff we've always heard the Texians were firing at the Mexicans. I hope we get more info on this. Hard to believe the DRT is so clueless on this stuff.
Thanks for posting this info Mark.

...I only went inside once during a week-long visit. Did you run into Dr. Hardin?

...I only went inside once during a week-long visit. Did you run into Dr. Hardin? No, I didn't see him. But then again, as I said, I was at the Alamo only a very short time. Ironically, the real action was going on a short distance away on private property.

I thought you might have, as you both were in the gift shop at the same time one day...however, he wasn't wearing a suit as in previous times I've seen him come through so he might not have stood out.

Well, sometimes its hard to discern specific details in that room, amongst all the bodies and regalia...I basically went in to buy a few books, gifts for family members, and get out as fast as I could.

I've been there Mark and I totally empathize. My mother might be in there and I could miss her.

I hear you Mark! I also got out as fast as I could. The gift shop was bedlam that day. Still, I'm sorry I missed you.
I don't alway wear a suit--especially during our hot Texas summers when I off the academic clock.

. . . but you're right, Allen. Even when out of a suit, I'm hard to miss!

Dang, Mark --- I wish I had checked this earlier. I was in San Antonio last weekend and would have loved meeting you. Maybe next time.
Also, I was in town over the July 4th weekend, and walked the grounds and went through the shrine that Saturday. The crowds in the curch and gift shop were insane. And, yes, the DRT has a lot of foreign-made souvenires, including a plentiful supply of those thimbles.
