Another new DVD release I'd highly recommend (if you're a fan) is the new Peter Bogdonovich documentary on Tom Petty, "Runnin' Down a Dream", available exclusively at Best Buy for just $24.99. It's a 4 disc set, 3 DVDs and an audio CD. The documentary runs 4 hours on 2 discs, there's a DVD of the Gainesville 30th Anniversary show, and an audio disc of the concert. It's very well done, with a ton of video footage from every stage of Petty's career (I can't believe so much was documented) and a lot of candid moments that reminded me of "Don't Look Back" in their intensity. It's almost a Horatio Alger story. Very interesting. Jim

Saw it a Best Buy in Rochester yesterday, for $29.95 (I guess a dollar ain't worth as much up North), and held off, thinking it would be on Amazon for less.
Wrong.

I almost forgot this anniversary: yesterday it was thirty years ago that Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crashed near McComb, Mississippi. Three members of the band, Ronnie Van Zandt and brother/sister Steve and Cassie Gaines were killed, as was their assistant road manager, the pilot, and the co-pilot. A sad day for music. I was never much interested in Skynyrd back in the day (too much overkill on FM and AM radio, with "Freebird" and "Sweet Home Alabama" about every five minutes) but have since come to love and appreciate them for their many fine qualities. Steve Gaines, in particular, showed promise in his last year of developing into a fine singer and writer. And Ronnie--who knows what heights he would have scaled. I wish they'd stuck around a while longer.
RIP

I just discovered this site and thought I'd pass it on to you guys: harmonica.typepad.com/harmonica_ramblings/This guy posts some very good podcasts in MP3 format, which I'd recommend downloading. Some eclectic and tasty stuff here. Dig around on the site a bit, it's worth your time. Jim

Here's a cool site I just discovered: mog.com/. MOG is a myspace type area that is focused on music recommendations. I've been digging around a bit and finding it interesting. Of course, the last thing I need to do is spend even more money on CDs. I've found that a lot of these people have musical tastes similar to mine, in other words, all over the map. I know I'm not the only one in the Jook Joint that likes variety...a typical playlist of mine might have a Mingus track followed by Hank Williams followed by Toots and the Maytals. I really like a juxtaposition of styles that end up working surprisingly well together. At any rate, if you've got some time to go down the rabbit hole, check out Mog. On another note, I don't know if there are any XM subscribers on the forum here, but I've really been enjoying the new season of Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour. Jim

Whoa! Some great films in there, including two-minute previews if you don't want to download the whole film. "Rattlesnakes: A Festival at Cross Forks, PA" was filmed in the early 1990s a half-hour south of me, in Potter County ("God's Country," as the locals are wont to call it), Pennsylvania. I'll vouch for Dylan's "Theme Time Radio Hour" on XM but am still working through the first year's shows.

Are these earlier shows archived somewhere? I missed a lot of the first season.

That's a great album! I had it on tape back in the day, and found an import CD copy a year or so ago at a big independent record store in Charlotte. Love his version of "School Is Out"! Jim
On another note, I see the new coverboy on the latest issue of "Dirty Linen" is none other than Bill Kirchen.

I've been spending so much time (and so much money after reading the site) on "Harmonica Ramblings" that I can't help but plug the page again: harmonica.typepad.com/harmonica_ramblings/The site is operated by Ben Felton, a French harmonicist, but these pages are in English and they've really exposed me to a lot of great new music. Ben's tastes are more eclectic than mine, and that's saying something. I've downloaded and listened to all 7 of his themed podcasts, and I can highly recommend them. I especially like his comments on the tracks and the juxtaposition of styles in the music presented. Give him a look. Jim

Been listening to that "Slide" podcast; nice! Ever listen to/download the podcasts on The Roadhouse? I haven't snagged any of their podcasts yet, but it looks like there are hundreds of them. roadhousepodcast.com/

That's another site I didn't know about. Like I don't already have enough to listen to! Check out the Rambling Podcast's Acoutic show if you want a real treat. Some great live Ry Cooder/David Lindley on that one. It also opens with a stellar interpretation of "Ode to Billy Joe" by a French harmonica master, J.J. Milteau. First time I heard him, but I went searching immediately... Jim
