Is this the image, Rich? This one looks to be from an old trading card of sorts, but I think it looks more like a copy of the DeRose painting. Jim

I've seen this one before in several places and always assumed it was a copy DeRose.

Reviving an old thread here. When I was in Nashville a couple of weeks ago I spent days in the State Library and Archives and turned up an image of the Saint Jean painting Rich mentions above. I'll scan and post it when I can, but I concur that it is not an original and likely another copy of the Peale painting, albeit a bad one. I need to go back through my notes and Crockett family correspondence, but I believe this Saint Jean was commissioned as a copy of the Peale because the Peale was in such poor condition. Crockett's grandson was sent a photo of the Saint Jean and disliked it so much he asked for it to be destroyed. I'm still planning on releasing a detailed study and chronology of all the Crockett portraits and prints. Hopefully it will clear up a lot of misinformation that's floating around out there. Jim
