Because some of our members are on dial up, posting pictures in this category gives them the opportunity to view them at their leisure, while enabling them to participate in ongoing forum discussions without the encumbrance of slow loading pages.
This isn't a hard and fast rule, but a courtesy. If a picture is pertinent to a post and helps make a point, then feel free to post under the appropriate thread.
If you are posting multiple images, like I did in the Goliad thread before this topic was created, then it might be better to start the thread here instead.
Thanks, Jim

What a novel topic. A place to just post photos. I just hope you're not thinking about creating a thread for obnoxious [glow=orange,2,300] loud talkers.[/glow] Oops! Sorry about that.

I was jes experimenting with the letter size, colors and glow effect on here. I'm not really loquacious beyond this letter size.

Hi Bob, welcome. I just sent you an email with a brief explanation, but we should really post something here so everyone knows how...it's something that gets asked a lot via PM. The short answer is one must have an account on an image hosting site like Photobucket, then copy and past the http link of the image here and tag it with the "insert image" button in the reply window. I'll try and compose more clear step by step instructions and post them here ASAP. It's not hard to post images, but it's a multi-step process. Jim

Something which was emphasised to me on another site is that before thinking about image posting you need to install something that will re-size pictures - there's a free Microsoft tool, the name of which escapes me, which I use. Re-sizing anything posted on to the image hosting site to small ensures that it doesn't take up too much space here and require the rest of us to scroll right and left and up and down to see it all

Stuart - I understand the computer reasons to resize an image that will be posted, bandwidth, download time, screen resolution, etc., however if there are others are like me they will want to have a high resolution image that shows as much detail as possible. I would prefer large file sizes with more detail than down-sized, lower resolution images. It is very frustrating to ALMOST see something or to see it as a fuzzy blur when it could have been sharp.
Jim: Could you send me the directions for posting images, or post them here for all to read please. I have a few that I would like to share and would appreciate knowing how.
Is there a reason you prefer us to link to an image rather than send it as an attachment? Certainly copyright is a good reason to link to an image but links can evaporate if/when a person drops or is dropped from a photo hosting site, but a an image that is attached will be in the forum archives. If an image came from a different website (e.g. Library of Congress) I always appreciate having the web address so that I can explore the site for even more information.

As for attachments, that service is available as an option on proboards, but there is a monthly cost. If enough people are interested in investing in the option we can look into it, but the storage has to be maintained every month in order to archive the attachments. Jim

I use Webshots. I can choose the degree of photo resolution when I store pictures there (I also select the highest resolution in my digital camera when shooting the pictures). You can then copy the URL link for any picture and paste it into your post here on the forum as part of your posted message. Webshots has a list of options for linking your photos, including "Post In a Forum." That is the link you want to copy and paste into your post. The picture should appear here as part of your post in whatever resolution you chose. Here's a picture I took in England a few years ago; I've selected 600 pixels, the highest Webshots offers: AW

Test of using the "Attachment" feature to post a photo. Hi res stuff won't work because you may only post files with a maximum size of 1024.0 KB. Allen Attachments:

It's tricky. I have to shrink all my images (hi-rez) to the 50-75 KB size before posting.
