On a related note, I like this account from an Alabama volunteer:
I got this from Brassey's History of Uniforms, Mexican-American War 1846-48 by Ron Field.
Maybe our Texas soldier managed to get one of the increasingly common Mexican frock coats. I can see how one of these would be comfortable enough to wear for the duration of the War.

Maybe our Texas soldier managed to get one of the increasingly common Mexican frock coats. I can see how one of these would be comfortable enough to wear for the duration of the War. Maybe, but they snagged other types of garb too. I have a notice from the New Orleans Daily Delta of July 13, 1848, in which the editor described a former officer of Texas Mounted Volunteers, just back from Mexico, who visited the Delta office. He was wearing a "check shirt, with a Mexican Cavalry roundabout, a Texan Ranger’s pantaloons, and a United States Infantry cap on." A roundabout, of course, is a short jacket. Not sure exactly what "Texas Ranger's pantaloons" were; possibly buckskin, or homespun? The "United States Infantry cap" was no doubt a model 1839 forage cap. Wish I had a daguerreotype of that guy

I went to the link(American Heritage) but found only the article, no daguerreotype shown of George Henry Tobin? ? First time I have tried to reply here, so have no idea what will come through.

andrewkent1830, the daguerreotype isn't available in the online version of American Heritage. You'd have to dig up a hardcopy of that issue.

Thank you for the clarification. I will see if I can find a a hard copy. Since my GGGrand Daddy, Bosman Clifton Kent was in McCulloch's Company A at Monterey in '46, I 'd like to take a gander at the dag....... I have read most of the written descriptions of the Rangers of that time period, but looking at a depiction would be interesting. thanks again, Mark

Tom,
Is the dag of Tobin worth hunting down? I always like to have references of these guys from the period... there are very few dags that we are certain are rangers.
