I was watching this movie not long ago for the 50th or 60th time, (I'm a big Steve McQueen fan), and noticed something which has always grabbed my attention. In the early part of the movie, Max Sand (McQueen) uses an unusual percussion-type rifle, which, if I'm not seeing things, looks to be an over/under arrangement, with one barrel being a larger caliber than the other. Does anyone know what this weapon is, and if it ever really existed?

It's been a long time since I saw this movie, so I don't remember this particular rifle, but such configurations weren't all that uncommon. Generally, though, iirc, the most common were a rifle/shotgun combination.
However, in Africa, a big bore rifle and a smaller caliber rifle combination was often used.

I never noticed the fact that one barrel appears larger than the other & missed that part of the movie when it was on recently. I always thought it had a very strong resemblence to a Hopkins and Allen turn barrel percussion rifle that I once owned. Mine was .44 caliber in both barrels. I'll try to catch the movie again and pay a little closer attention to the rifle.

I have posted a photo in the "Images" section; not the best, but the only one I could find that shows what I think is the gun you are discussing.

In the poster it certainly appears to be smoothbore and rifle combo but sice it is an artist rendition am not sure it is like the weapon Mcqueen actually used in the movie.

I saw Nevada Smith on dvd for the first time ever yesterday and enjoyed it very much. Karl Maldin was excellent as the heavy. The combination gun in the billboard picture is hardly even seen in the movie, but it is pretty cool.
I also found it interesting that among several great character actors in this film, Pat Hingle plays a Louisianna prison guard named Bigfoot. This strikes me as a little coincidental because Bigfoot Wallace served as New Orleans police officer for a short time and hunted down convicts.
