I received my copy of Thompson's book last week, and I'm just fifty-three pages into it. It's not a narrative history in the usual sense. Thompson tells Crockett's story as he visits the sites pertaining to his life, talking with local historians, hearing local Crockett lore - basically getting a feel for David's impact on that particular settlement or area. It's an easy read. There are no end notes, but a "Note on Sources" section. He has high praise for THREE ROADS TO THE ALAMO in which the Crockett sections "could easily stand alone" as a single biography and for DAVID CROCKETT IN CONGRESS which is an "invaluable resorce for Crockettologists."
