I was reading the Kerrville newspaper and I came across an article saying that a local farmer had found this sword in his field. Any ideas what it might be? The article is on this page, about halfway down: joeherringjr.blogspot.com/

Someone I know who's familiar with sharp things says it looks like a Spanish colonial/Mexican espada ancha, most likely from the 1800-1820s period, and thus still in use through the Texas revolution, and many decades more within Mexico itself. Not terribly valuable in relic condition, though it's good that the blade and hilt are still together.
Seems to me that the farmer ought to rent or borrow a metal detector and look into whether the sword wound up there randomly, or whether there is more of a story there, one worth some systematic mapping and study. Didn't the Republic of Texas propose to put a frontier fort out in that general area?
