Pedro Santoni just shared three of his articles with me on the Mexican Civic Militia:
Civilians in Wartime Latin America: Greenwood Press 2008. His chapter is The Civilian Experience in Mexico during the War with the United States, 1846-1848.
"Where Did the Other Heroes Go?" Exalting the Polko National Guard Battalions in Nineteenth-Century Mexico" Journal of Latin American Studies #34 (2002).
"Lucas Balderas-Popuar Leader and Patriot" The Human Tradition in Mexico, Scholarly Resouces Inc, 2003.
In all of these Pedro touches on the cult of the Ninos created by Diaz and recent attempts to re-interpret the legend.
