Gunsmoke: The Last Apache (Gunsmoke II -- the second TV movie Gunsmoke) costarring Michael Learned, Richard Kiley and Geoffrey Lewis was film at Alamo Village, and I had the opportunity to work with Arness -- and John Mantley, the executive producer. Hugh O'Brien played General Nelson Miles in the movie-of-the-week, and I found it fascinating that both of these early heroes of mine were on the set at the same time. As even as their recorded dialogue was in the final mix of the movie, I was very surprised by how different their approach to line delivery was on the set. O'Brien (who had quite a hearing defect) could be heard all over Front Street when he did his scenes of close-up dialogue. By contrast, Arness was so softspoken with his lines that I could hardly understanding him when I stood right next to the camera. O the talent of the Hollywood sound recordist! From then on, I really appreciated how much those different techniques of speaking influenced our awareness of their on-screen personas.
