I add my congratulations to the 2011 Si. Louis Cardinals! "Destiny... Destiny...no escaping Destiny!" (Apologies to Gene Wilder and Mel brooks) After game 6, the exhausted gods of baseball couldn't put together a better game 7. Could it be? One strike away! Twice! I think we'll see many teams up their search for their own Mariano Rivera lights out closer. I didn't think it was possible to further enhance Rivera's stature, but the Rangers found a way. Now, on to football. Goooooooo! Giants!!!!!!! Lou PS: Only 107 days until "Pitchers and Catchers!"

I would never underrate Mariano's unreal achievements. However, in the World Serious, anything can happen. What twisted cosmic joke did the Baseball gods have in mind when they had him, Rivera hisself, blow game 7 of the 2001 Series in Phoenix with a bum throw to first on a routine play? The Series often seems to create its own aura, chemistry, momentum, reality. And this year, something was really going on with these Cardinals. Personally, I believe that it coincides with the 100th anniversary of Vincent Price's birth. One of the 2 or 3 top Hollywood ghouls of all time, Vincent was born and raised (where else?) in St. Louis! No way his spirit was not running amok in that stadium for the final two nights, casting who-knows-what-sort-of-spell on the non-destiny Rangers! Or, was it the Washington, D.C. curse on a team that abandoned the nation's capital some 40 years ago, moved to Texas, and has not won the Series since? I kind of doubt it because, if it were true, the Minnesota Twins would suffer the same curse, right? No, I'm putting my money on destiny, the year of the Cards that no one could stop -- with an assist from Vincent Price!

Tony LaRussa announced his retirement today. First-ballot HOFer, the only question is, where does he rank among the pantheon of the greatest managers in baseball history?

Funny you mentioned Vincent Price. I had a Halloween Party for the kids and showed "House on Haunted Hill." Scared their butts off so we had to glue them back on!
And Yes, I remember Rivera in 2001. It should never have got to the 7th game.
Tony LaRussa - one the the modern legends. It's hard to compare him to managers before 1965 like Casey Stengle, although he has a great legacy of his own that us Easterners can't appreciate. First round for sure!

La Russa is in and deserves it. He's done well and managers can only do so much; they can't get out there and pitch or bat or field. They make the best moves they can, or think they should, and then hold their breath. Notice how La Russa went from an idiot on the phone mishap to a genius by the end of the series. Never fails. Anyway, he done good.
Yeah - I'm tellin' ya; there's something to this Vincent Price theory of mine!

GUYS - I MOVED THE LATTER PART OF THE DISCUSSION TO THE "STATE OF THE GAME" THREAD AS WE SEEM TO HAVE FINISHED WITH THE 2011 SEASON. NATURALLY, YOU'RE FREE TO POST HERE ON THAT TOPIC, BUT THE OTHER POSTS SEEMED MORE GENERIC AND APPROPRIATE TO "STATE OF THE GAME."
By the way - interesting to go back to page 1 of this AL East thread and re-read everyone's thoughts throughout the season.
