I find it hard to drive past a thrift store without stopping to peruse their books and CDs.
Good find yesterday: A Relix collection of live Commander Cody and a Roger McGuinn Live in Spain CD. A buck each. Oh, and the McGuinn was an autographed copy. Not too shabby!

Live Commander Cody circa 1973-74 would be a great thing. He plays my town every couple of years; Bill Kirchen's been here four or five times too. Helluva nice guy and great picker.

Bill Kirchen - "Truckin' Trees For Christmas." Can't believe they are so clueless they didn't understand that was an autographed McGuinn CD!!! Nice!

Love Kirchen -- he performed at the Lowell Folk Fest in Lowell, Mass., around 2007, I think. That boy can pick some guitar.

Doh! I knew my mind wasn't kicking in today! I wasn't really aware of who Kirchen was (which shows how non-eclectic my musical knowledge is) until I saw him playing here last summer at an open-air pavilion called Rockville Town Center, very near my house (Jim; we took you to dinner there during one of your visits; the tapas joint, I think). During the summer they have live music many nights of the week and Bill was there one night; terrific performance -- and free! I bought his CD "King of Dieselbilly" and didn't even have the presence of mind to get him to sign it! He lives around here and apparently comes from near here, so maybe I'll see him again.

I hope I get to see him perform again some day. He's a heck of guit-picker.
UPDATE: Looks like I'll get my wish -----
I just checked his site and saw that he's booked to return to the Lowell Folk Festival in Lowell, Mass., the last weekend in July. I will definitely be there!
Friday 7/29 thru Sunday 7/31 -- Lowell Folk Festival -- with Jack O'Dell drums and Maurice Cridlin on bass

Hope he does "Hot Rod Lincoln"; a lot of fun.

I'm sure he will. That's how he closed his show in Lowell in 2007. Brought the house down.

Kirchen's sometime band the Twangbangers play a killer version of "Hot Rod Lincoln" that's about 9 minutes long. They quote just about every notable lick you can think of. It's hot and hilarious.

I took a guitar workshop with Kirchen a couple of years ago. He said that one of the key songs to master if you want to excel on guitar is "Hideaway" by Freddie King. The hardest part of that song is accurately playing those descending double-stops in the bridge, and he did it as smooth as butter. Kirchen also is a master of the Mississippi John Hurt style of finger picking. It was cool seeing that famous Telecaster of his up close; that thing has been through the mill, but what tone!

That 9-minute version of "Hot Rod Lincoln" (live) is on the CD I mentioned, along with (I think) an 8-minute studio version. It's a total hoot and irresistible. Every lick known to man! And he does them all flawlessly.
