Just as an aside, just think of those Irish who were loyal to their oaths to Mexico during the Texas revolution. They were branded Tories. The differnce between a Civil War and a war between two nations.

Should have claified slightly. The legend is at they were all Irish deserters, which, of course, they were not.

Was Texas actually ever not a war between 2 nations since the Louisiana Purchase?

Depends on how you want to interprete it my northern friend... But most folks see it as part of a Civil War that turned into a war for independence...

we are getting off topic but Canada was possibly the next target after the conquest of Mexico. In 1838 an army of American filibusters tried to recreate the Texas success in Canada using our anti- British revolts in 1837 as a form of war for independence. But they misread the Canadian situation. Lets face it, North America between 1825- 1850 was an area of expansionist intrique and we really have to understand this period as it relates to the Alamo.

The movie is terrible. Regardless how you feel about the subject, the execution was awful.
Some of the scenery is nice, but nearly every aspect involving people is dull and predictable - cliches strung together with sappy music. Even the battle scenes are bad. You get the impression that every battle in the War was fought by mobs of US infantry sprinting towards Mexican artillery inexplicably placed just outside the walls of fortified positions. One arrives at the conclusion that the Americans are literally overrunning Mexico because of the Mexican inability to understand the purpose of walls. I actually found it distracting.
I do own it, and maybe once a year or so, forget how bad it sucks and watch it just to be reminded.

I think of all of the Irish, English, German, Scots and other immigrants who joined the US Army and remained loyal to their oaths during the Mexican War. And all people seem to want to do is remember those who did not...

Every St. Patrick's day diplomatic dignataries from Ireland and Mexico get together in Mexico City to honor the San Patricios. The irony is according to what I've read the U.S. army was up to 25% Irish born. So Ireland gave far more to the U.S. than to Mexico. Do the math.

Within the context of the Mexican War, the story of the San Patricio Battalion is, at best, a sidebar. I've always believed that who we pay homage to says more about who we are than those who we are honoring.
In my book, there are few crimes more heinous than desertion. You have One Man's Hero, well now you have One Man's Opinion.

Thank you Hiram for the bibliography. I first heard of the San Patricios as a kid when a lot of us were wearing Davy Crockett caps and shooting cap pistols. I thought it was a family secret and not many people knew about it and I definitely kept my mouth shut.
