For some reason magazine articles on the Alamo, Crockett and related stories seem more prevalent than in previous years. The February Wild West magazine had two articles on the Alamo (by Hutton and Groneman) and the recent American History magazine has a fantastic piece on Crockett by author Steve Harrigan. I might be a little biased toward a fellow Austinite, but I think Harrigan's treatment of Crockett is the best short analysis of the frontiersman and his ambiguous demise. I hope we'll see more interesting articles celebrating the 175th Anniversary of the Texas Revolution in the near future. Keep your eyes peeled.

Ugh! I forgot to mention yesterday that True West magazine has a 175th Anniversary issue out with four articles on the Alamo by Bob Boze Bell, Bart Bull, Max Boardman and Paul Hutton. I haven't read it yet, but there are lots of interesting illustrations and photographs.

Can't seem to find True West anywhere around these parts (southern New Hampshire). The Local B&N has Wild West only. Looks like I won't get a chance to get my hands on it.

I'm still looking, but apparently the powers that be don't think there's any interest in things Alamo or Texas up here.

Received the March issue of TRUE WEST today. The article detailing Wade's journey from a nine-year-old Alamo buff to a re-enactor and Alamo tour guide is excellent. Congratulations, Wade!

Texas Monthly magazine has a cool 175th anniversary issue with an interesting removable 3D Lone Star flag design. It also includes a list of 175 memorable events and locations in Texas history. I disagree with a few of them. www.texasmonthly.com/

Sorry, but I couldn't resist. We don't see Texas Monthly on the stands up here in ol' Cow Hampshire.

Nearly every presidential candidate shows up at the Alamo for a photo op at some point. JFK was there in 1960 and reportedly wanted to get out fast after his speech without wading through the crowd, so he asked "Where's the back door to this place?" He was told there was no back door and the wag who told him reportedly added "Why do you think there were so many heroes???"

There's an article in this month's Guns of the Old West on Capt. John C. Hays and the Colt revolvers that he made famous. There seems to be a few mistakes misstatements in the text, but of course that's just my opinion. It is a good general article overall on Hays and his pistols.
