Bad news: Texas Rangers will not have Cliff Lee in 2011.
Good News: Neither will the Yankees.
Out of nowhere, I read this morning that Lee has signed with the Phillies.
Personally, I think Cliff is a good pitcher who was able to shine in his division with the Rangers. But his history as a pitcher is really kind of so-so, and he'd been with the Phillies (and gotten traded away) once before. He may have come into his own, but I'm not convinced that 2010 was more than just a one-time best season. We will see. He was a good fit for the Rangers and that division.
Anyway, the Sox could have probably used his talents on the mound, too, but it doesn't look like they pursued him. They kind of blew their player budget last week, anyway.
Spring training is about 2 1/2 months away. Play ball, y'all.

I don't think the Sox wanted to shell out that kind of money for a guy Lee's age. He has been great, but he's also human and no one is as perfect as the announcers always carry on during post season non-stop chattering. They just paid a lot for their 2 newest additions as well. Nonetheless, as I've said, I share your concern re: pitching.
I, too, am delighted that Lee stiffed the Yankees and, for once, they couldn't buy up any star they went after. It's actually kind of nice to see Lee back with the Phillies. When he's on, he's unbeatable, but I would have said that about Beckett once too. I'm hoping he can come back this year; it would make a world of difference.

I would still say that about Beckett --- the question is, when IS he on?
I agree that Lee wasn't even on the radar for Boston, based on their two other big-bucks acquisitions last week. At least the Sox won't have to deal with Lee unless Philly and Boston meet for interleague play or make to the World Series next year.
