Good article, though I'm not sure Fish's theology is consistent. Maybe I need to read it again. The highlighted reader's comments were, IMHO, as perceptive as the column.
I saw the film yesterday and enjoyed it. Not as far afield as I've come to expect from the Coens, but an amusing way to spend a couple of hours.

Well, I saw the film today and enjoyed it very much. I hesitate to compare it to the 1969 John Wayne version as I like that one too. I felt this was a much grittier, realistic film and it made the girl, Mattie Ross, much more the center of the film than the earlier version did. You really see this more through Mattie's eyes. I thought Wayne's Rooster was more of the central focus than Bridges' character, but it's pretty hard to make a movie starring John Wayne that did not center on him.
I'm not really sure that I got the same religious symbolism out of the film that Fish did, but I find his article very interesting. Movies can still be art forms and thus register very different impressions among those who see them.

Saw it on New Year's Day and loved every minute of it. A must see on the big screen. Definitely getting the DVD when it comes out.

Sounds like an entertaining "must see." I usually shy away from remakes, but this one seems worth investing a couple hours of my ever-waning lifetime to watch.

I saw TG last night and it was pretty d@mn good. I'm torn as to weather it was better than the original as both films have their little flaws and inconsistencies. Matt Damon definitely made a better Texas ranger than Earl Campbell.

Just re-read the Portis novel over the weekend, after seeing both versions of the film, and find it a great story, no matter how it's told. But, as with most screen adaptations, there's not substitute for the original book.
By the way, does anyone know why the new "True Grit" film was absent from the awards show the other night? I often wonder how anyone can watch more than about 5 minutes of these self-indulgent awards shows. My wife says that women like to look at the clothes people are wearing.

Hollywood doesn't like Westerns. Glad the Coen brothers didn't let that stop them. My daughter bought me a copy of the book for my birthday. Looking forward to reading it.

I saw the remake of True Grit yesterday and loved it. Please don't waste time comparing it to the John Wayne version. They are very similar, even the dialogue in some places is virtually the same. But it's grittier than JW's and more visably violent and bloody as are most action films today. But the acting and the atmosphere is superb. And, don't be concerned about GlennCambell, Matt Damon acts circles around him and is much more believable. JW's True Grit reflected a more sanitary time in Hollywood. This TG is much more like Wayne's, "The Cowboys" in tone and delivery. I think most movie goers, whether Wayne fans or not will enjoy this film. There ain't no bigger John Wayne fan than me, and I loved Jeff Bridges in this retelling of a great movie. Now I have to read the #@*%!& book to see how it ends.

I had pretty much the same impression of the two film versions; you will enjoy the book, believe me!
