I have recently finished reading Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes, an epic novel of the Vietnam War. This is by far one of the most brilliant and powerful war novels I have ever read. The descriptions and prose could only have been written by a decorated combat veteran which the author was. I highly recommend it to everyone out there.

I will second this recommendation. While I was not in Vietnam, this novel feels like the real deal. It is hard to put down.
This book puts you in the bush from the first page and doesn't let go.
You have to respect the brave men who slogged it out in that place--draftees and volunteers, alike.

A combat veteran for an author, thirty years to get this into print, there are interviews with the author on YouTube if your internet connection is fast enough.
