Gaines Mill, Part 6
OUR LOSSES
The next morning we were called into formation and each company of each regiment in our briggade held another muster and counted the men present, killed, wounded or missing. Our regt’s losses were 14 killed, 128 wounded (22 of whom later died of their wounds) and 3 missing. Later in the day we were visited by Gen’l Wigfall (now senator) who gave us a speech, followed by Gen’l Hood, who did the same. Our sentiments at that time were quite mixed. Of course, we were gratified and proud of our accomplishment but it was impossible to be too exhuberant, as so many comrades had fallen, some never to rise again. Never again would they feel the warm embrace, or taste the sweet kisses of their loved ones at home. Theirs was a sad, but gallant soldier’s death and they sleep the sleep of heroes, fallen upon the altar of their country. But we shall all meet again in Heaven.
So ended our first battle and victory won, but dearly so, as many of our good friends and comrades were gone forever. Our company’s losses were as follows, to wit: John Jackson, L.D. Price and Wm. Stansell killed. J.M. Abney, T.P. Brown, Jas P. Durham, M.S. Mason, Art. Nichols, T. Northcutt, L.M. Peters, J.L. Robertson, W.P. Stanley, W.A. Steele, J.W. Wheeler and D.B. Whitfield were wounded, for a total of 3 killed and 12 wounded.

Thanks Mike, from the lack of feedback, there don't seem to be many CW buffs out there. But I'm glad you're enjoying it at least!
