For all we may know, Bowie may have indeed fallen from a wall. Potter got his info on the battle from soladados returning to Mexico, from a number of Mexicans who remained in Texas, from John Bradburn, and Bexarenos. I'm sure he didn't invent the Bowie fall scenario out of thin air. SOMEONE must have told it to him, whatever its questionable authenticity may be.

I think I saw an illustration of Bowie falling from a platform in a Classic Comic treatment of the Alamo, back in the fifties or sixties. I'm surprised you gentlemen missed it. Isn't that more authoritative than Potter? Jesse

There seems to be far too much testimony to Bowie being laid up with something nasty to disregard it in favour of his being injured in a fall (see my Alamo Journal article on "What Ails you Jim"), but something which does occur to me is that illnesses of this kind can be triggered by a period of lying in bed recovering from something quite unrelated. Its possible therefore that Bowie was hurt, say nothing worse than a sprained ankle, by a fall but then developed something worse while laid up.

and I can't believe I am setting the pop culture record straight- Last Command-hurt by cannon over turning early in the siege Wayne-Wound in leg by artillery blast. The fall was only part of the effects of the explosion. He is still on his feet (with carbine splints) when a second shell knocks him down in the main battle and he sent to the "chapel." Potter seems to start it in 1860 (and as Gary notes later changes). One wonders the effect of a sword cane to the chest (punctured lung) years earlier and any medicine he may have been taking. As I recall Arness (?) falls from the wall in 13 DAYS? And thank YOU, Gary, for saving me having to type this. ;D
