One of Custer's company commanders at LBH and a survivor of the battle, Tom McDougall, somehow wound up living in my flyspeck of a town in his last years. I walk by his house, which is still there, all the time, and wonder about the things he must have seen on that day.

I'll bet that Gabby Hayes (another distinguished denizen of your berg) picked up a lot of material from him!

Trumpeter Giovanni Martini eventually retired from the service and lived the rest of his life a happy family man in a Brooklyn apartment, finally passing away in the early 1920s.

Allen, I haven't checked into the possiblity of that connection, but I can tell you I live two houses away from the house old Gabby was born in.

Oh, I remember it sooooo well! Wasn't the sponsor Quaker Puffed Wheat & Rice??? I even had his comic books! And, beyond that, Gabby in the older Hopalong Cassidy and Roy Rogers films. My favorite western sidekick from that era. Tom - do you ever get strange vibes from that house? Like waking in the night, swearing you've heard some old guy call you a "young whipersnapper"

Not sure where to post this question, so I stuck it on this thread.
Is there any hard evidence that Custer visited the Alamo? I've never been asked that question by any visitor, I'm just curious myself.
I do get questions about G.A.C. and the Alamo, but the question is always "Didn't Custer die here?"
Seriously, I have gotten this question more than a few times these past few years.
I know he was stationed in Austin (his headquarters is the oldest building on the campus of U.T.) I haven't read as much on Custer as some other ASF members have, so maybe someone can give me some insight on this. Thanks.

Happy to see Alamo visitors are still asking informed questions!
The answer may be in John Carroll's book, Custer in Texas.

Happy to see Alamo visitors are still asking informed questions! The answer may be in John Carroll's book, Custer in Texas. Looks like this title is out of print. I'm curious about this question now too. I had someone ask me almost the opposite question about Crockett... "Wasn't he killed by Indians?" "No, he died at the Alamo." "Oh, that's right. Who am I thinking of?" "Uh...Custer?" "Yeah, that's the guy!" Good grief.

Probably have it at the DRT Library.
One of the best was a comment on why the name of the well known Native American was not on the Cenotaph-yes-Busted Luck.

I keep getting people who think Daniel Boone died at the Alamo, and/or think that Boone and Crockett were the same person. Like "What's the difference between Boone and Crockett?" Unreal.
