By writing Juan Seguin out of the script for whatever reason it revives the myth of white Anglo-Saxon settlers carving a new land out of an undeserving corrupt and decadent Mexico in the name of American values and manifest destiny. Henderson Yoakum would be proud.
Yes, that myth is being perpetuated again and again. The Mexican government may very well have been corrupt, but one can hardly blame them for fighting to keep their country together.
"Present ALL of the evidence, for example, regarding Darwin, evolution and alternative theories and teach how to evaluate them using critical thinking."
Absolutely, Allen! I agree.
Maybe Darwin and evolution is a bad example because there are no alternative scientific theories to evolution (that I know of). Sure, there´s Creationism and Intelligent Design (another word for Creationism), but they´re not scientific theories, they´re merely ideas (according to a court verdict where a school board went to court fighting a school board member who wanted to introduce Intelligent Design into the curriculum as an alternative theory. It was established Intelligent Design was´nt a scientific theory but merely an idea without any scientific background. The whole "battle" later became a TV documentary).
" In many cases, it is a matter of read the text, do the worksheets, review, and take the tests."
That´s right, Kevin! I don´t like those tests because the stuff that´s not in the tests quickly becomes secondary and then it´s all about succeeding in taking the tests.
Over here, our right-wing government has started implementing those tests against the wishes of most teachers. It´s a bit funny because at the same time the British have started to become critical of the tests after having had them for years and seen the dubious results.
It´s all about politics, it seems, especially if it´s politicians who´s having a say about what goes into a test and what does´nt. If you want to have such tests, they should be created by scholars who does´nt have a political agenda, I think.
