Has anyone published a study of the different Volunteer uniforms?

Ron Field covered the volunteers in one of the volumes of Brassey's History of Uniforms "Mexican War 1846-48" back in 1997

Sandy, Field's book is the one I'd recommend if you are looking for a one-stop reference. It has a generous quantity of daguerreotypes of volunteers in uniform, and color photos of surviving specimen garments. I believe it's out of print in the U.S., but you can find used copies online in the +- $30 range.
There's an older reference that's still in print, Philip Katcher's The Mexican-American War 1846-48, in the Osprey "Men at Arms" series, a slim paperback with some nice color illustrations by Gerry Embleton, but it doesn't contain nearly as much information as Field's book.

Friends:
I have just heard from Keith Durham that the great English illustrator Richard Hook has passed away.
Richard did the color plates for my first book, THE TEXAS RANGERS (Osprey Elite no. 36) way back in 1991.
Yet, most members of this forum will recall his brilliant illustrations for Ron Field's MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR 1846-48 published as part of Brassey's History of Uniforms.
Richard was one of us; he will be missed.

Awww...that is sad news, Doc. Richard Hook had the feel for the era, not to mention a unique, recognizable style of his own. "Brilliant" is not an overstatement.

Don Troianni's SOLDIERS IN AMERICA 1754-1865 has some uniforms of the era, US and Mexican, but no volunteer uniforms. The Illinois National Guard Museum in Springfield has some uniforms, they might be able to give you some information...
