I can't find it on Amzon or on Nelson's own website.

Thanks Tom; I'll check into it. I keep my old edition of Nelson next to the "Alamo Reader" and reach for them often.

I picked up the soft-cover new edition of George's "The Alamo -- An Illustrated History" at the gift shop last week, and I think it's a must-have. Mark's book is next on my list...being of limited means these days, I have to limit myself to one book per Alamo visit.

You'll find yourself turning to it a lot, I'll wager. Jim

I need to pick up the new edition; the old one is getting worn and I only got the paperback edition of that.

OK - I was able to order the hardback new edition directly from Nelson, who also offered to sign it for me. It's on its way to me and I'm anxious to see what new info it contains. Thanks to Paul for providing George's email address.

Allen,
Please let me know if there is enough new stuff to justify getting a copy. My old copy is still in good shape.
Thanks, Bob

Well, I just had a great long talk wiith George, and it sounds like the new addition is probably something folks need to have in their collection.

I received the 2009 hard cover edition of George Nelson's book, The Alamo: An Illustrated History, today. I can only compare it to the 1998 paperback edition - the only other version I have. The book has been reorganized and improved in that regard; most of the original illustrations have been retained and a lot of new ones added. Nelson has written a new introduction and there is a new Foreword by Phil Collins (who says he also wrote a Foreword to an earlier edition; one that I clearly do not have).
There are many useful maps and illustrations as well as some new tables, such as Gen. Ampudia’s Report on the weapons and munitions captures at the Alamo on March 6; Report of Mexican dead and wounded by Gen. Andrade; sketches of Mexican uniforms, etc. I particularly noticed and liked having the Sanchez-Navarro map of the assault on the Alamo, with his map and “view” of the Alamo on the facing page, all with keys identifying details. On the next page is a full-page reproduction of the LaBastida map of the Alamo, with a key to locations.
The color plates have been moved to the front of the book. Some new drawings, such as Nelson’s concept of how a wooden octagon roof would look on the Alamo, have been added.
There is a new section on eyewitness accounts of the Battle.
I haven’t had time to get into it in detail, but it’s a nice looking book, is loaded with information, and the paper quality is excellent and will hold up under repeated use of the book. The only real glitch I spotted so far were duplicate uses of two illustrations; one appears on both pages 69 & 87; the other on pages 82 & 106.
Don’t throw out your older editions as a few illustrations seem to have been dropped from the earlier edition, but these are minor and outweighed by the new material in this edition.
There also are endorsements from Robert M. Utley and Noam Chomsky; and notices that the book has won the San Antonio Conservation Book Award and the Alamo Battlefield Book Award.
You'll definitely want to add this one to your library. I agree with Phil Collins, who says in his Foreword “Despite other books on the subject, George’s book remains a key work for those who wish to learn more about the Alamo’s origins and the changes it has endured, culminating with the famous Siege and Battle of 1836.”

An endorsement from Noam Chomsky? I like Chomsky. I´ve seen some documentaries about him and I have two of his books. I was´nt aware he ´s into the Alamo story though.
The book is on my list but I can´t seem to find the 2009 edition on Amazon. I´ll have to check out some of the other net book stores, I guess.

The new addition should be added to one's Alamo library. It only improves! Great job George!
