Well, if you do end up moving to Grapevine, keep us informed. Jim often has jobs in Dallas, and if schedules allow, we'll have to try to have a reunion of sorts.

That great news, Bluesdog. When you've had a chance to read TM, check in and let me know what you think of it.
And don't worry. I was late to every party I've ever been to!

Doc Well, at least you beat me to the San Jacinto Symp, so I could get your macabre signature. Maybe you're just fashionably late to unimportant shindigs. ;D

Yep, I'll let y'all know if I get to make this a permanent thing in Texas. Heck, I won't be able to contain myself. I have a good feeling about it, but it may be a few months before I know for certain. I loved this state when I used to live here (1994-'97) and have to say I've always felt like this place was "home".
Doc -- I'll certainly pass along my thoughts (and post a review about it on Amazon) when I'm done. I know the book shipped yesterday, but I still won't get my hands on it until Labor Day weekend. I can't wait.
A reunion of sorts sounds great. If I get to stay or get reassigned here permanently, a meeting in San Antonio would not be out of the question. We have friends and family there, and would probably be going down every couple of months for visits, anyway. I've been twice since May and will be heading down again this coming weekend.

Gents:
I wanted to advise all my 'mobros in the Houston area that I will be delivering a benefit lecture on the Rowdy Loafers. The Friends of the San Jacinto Battlefield are hosting the event and proceeds will support the 2009 San Jacinto Symposium.
WHEN: 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2008.
WHERE: La Carafe, 813 Congress on Old Market Square. (Note: La Carafe is in the Old Kennedy Bakery Building, which is the oldest building in Houston. Houston's oldest building is currently employed as a grog shop! How cool is that?)
COST: $75.00 per person. (pay at the door with check, cash, or credit card)
INCLUDES: An autographed copy of TEXIAN MACABRE, two "land certificates" that can be exchanged for drinks, a tax decuction of approximately $40.00, and a tour of 1837 sights around Market Square.
CONTACT PERSON: Barbara Eaves. Phone: 713-521-0768. E-mail: beaves1@comcast.net
Look, guys, I know that $75.00 a head is a mighty steep price tag. Recall, however, that this is for a great cause--and it should be a great evening.
I hope to see you there!
Dios y Tejas,
Doc

Sounds intriguing Doc, but will the grog shop let ja' bros' in with a scalped ticket and a chaw of tobacky. I already have a signed copy of Texas Macabre. The tour and the land script will be pretty cool though.

Hello Doc. I was looking for the book online and saw that there were at least two different covers. One of men at the gallows and another of a man sitting in a chair. Whats the story behind that?
All the best, Wade

Great question, Wade, and one that provides insight into the bizarre world of publishing.
Publishers announce books long before they are complete. At the time that the folks at State House Press were putting together the ad, Gary had only finished one illustration. The press guys thought that readers would want to see a mock-up of a cover--any cover. Problem was Gary had not yet done the cover illustration. As a result, they went with what they had: the illustration of Dr. Watson toasting a rat with a skull.
If you order the book, the dust jacket illustration will be the two men on the gallows, which Gary and I always envisioned as the cover art.
Thanks for the question.
Dios y Tejas,
Doc

Great question, Wade, and one that provides insight into the bizarre world of publishing. Publishers. I'm surprised they didn't switch the title around and call it Macabre Texian. That's what all-knowing New York publishers did to Mike's book. I don't know why publishers have to jump the gun and second guess their authors.

Well, I'm a board member of the Grady McWhiney Research Foundation, which owns State House Press. As a result, I had more clout with my press than most authors. I would have screamed bloody murder if they had pulled a stunt like that--and they would have had no choice but to listen.
That was not the case with Osprey. Man, don't get me started about them . . .

It's also more credible when a doctor cries bloody murder. Presently, I'm helping again with the final draft on Volume II, which should be out soon. Ranger history has been up-dated to the current year. Hey Doc. I might be able to make it to your little shindig tomorrow night. It's all dependent on my ability to install a new (used) tail light on my Buick, so I don't get pulled over by the DPS ranger wannabes between Austin and Houston. How are the roads around Houston and when does the Market Square tour end?

If this cluster copulation unfolds according to plan (and that's a big IF), it'll go down as follows:
5:45: Guests arrive. 6:15: Welcome. 6:30: Presentation. 7:00: Q&A. 7:15: Tour. 8:00: Close up shop.
As far as I know, all the roads into Houston are clear. Ike slammed some of the downtown high-rise buildings and broke out a bunch of windows, but someone should have swept up the glass by now.
Rod, if you can't make it tomorrow don't sweat it. I'll be doing something like this again soon. If there is time and demand, I might do it over High Holy Days.
Takes thinkin' on.

Thanks Doc. I'm going to try and make it. I'd like to get there early and do some research at the Met. Library and maybe say hello to a lady friend if I have time. Later.

Well, I didn't make it to La Carafe on time Friday. I ran into a ridiculous amount of traffic in West Houston and didn't get to the downtown area until 700 pm. I got a little lost among the tall buildings and figured I missed the best part of the event anyway. I was able to do some research at the wonderful Metropolitan Library on Saturday. I also met a few denizens of Houston right out of Texian Macabre and thankfully a lot of friendly people. I don't think I'll go back for awhile though.

Hey, RangerRod, not to worry. Like I said, we'll be doing this again. You can catch it the next time 'round.
You had said that you were going to say hello to a lady friend, so I just supposed that she had made you a better offer. . .
