It never dawned on me that except for Grant, presidents Hayes, Garfield, McKinley and Harrision were all Civil War veterans. Plus Brigadier General Chester A. Arthur and Brigadier General Andy Johnson, who were poor, but un-assassinated presidents.

Thanks skr for the heads up. Near the end, the book does cover Arthur and Johnson. Both were generals and both replaced assassinated presidents, but neither could garner the support of their party for their own election. Interestingly, the election of Democrat Cleveland over the Republican Blaine was the first time after the war when neither candidate had served.
