I have Zaboly's Colonial Rangers book, although I'm dispointed that he did not include the really early ranger companies of the 1600s. Mainly because I'm descended from two noted captains in Maryland. I've seen the illustrated Journal, but I believe Mr. Zaboly was working on a complete biography of Robert Rogers and that there was a possibilty for a movie.

The guy on this forum, to talk to about Roger's Rangers is tman. He and his brother have done a lot of work and irc, worked with Zaboly on his project, I believed they also helped out the author of "White Devil", but I'm on shaky ground there.

RR, do you mean Zaboly's book, A True Ranger: The Life and Many Wars of Major Robert Rogers? Only $230 used at Amazon Wow! That's the one. I didn't know it was out yet or that it was so expensive. I better save up my wampum before I shell out so much for the old Indian fighter.

Looks like A True Ranger went out of print within two years of publication, and now the book scalpers are reaping big $$ for used copies. The cheapest ones I've seen on the 'net are $125. Maybe you'll luck into an affordable copy from some unwitting bookseller.

I'm also tardy in thanking you guys for your help.

I just picked up Mike Cox's new book Wearing the Cinco Peso and though I've just started it looks pretty good.
I couldn't help noting, that it seems like at least half the foot notes refer to some Rodgers, guy!

Well, that's an exaggeration Wolf, but thanks. I've only found a couple references to me in the notes. I actually did a lot more work on this book than is apparent, but some items did not pan out and others were edited out by Forge Books in New York. While I read the entire manuscript (edited in writer parlance) three years ago, my expertise is mainly with the rangers of the 1840's. I provided several documents for these two chapters. I should state that Mike made a big goof in his friendly acknowledgement to me. I am not a descendant of Maj. Robert Rogers of Rogers's Rangers fame and don't want to be. He is "supposedly" a distant cousin through my Battle of Bunker Hill ancestor Joseph Rogers of Newberry, Massachuesetts. I supplied the original print of Maj. Rogers in the book, which I guess led to the confusion. I hope you enjoy the book. I believe the second edition will come out next year. Adios.

I made an interesting ranger or book acquisition the other day at a small independant (a dying breed) used book store. I found a beat up copy of Webb's Texas ranger book which looks like it spent too much time in someone's saddle bag. The paper cover is soiled and torn, but the pages are good. The most unique of the pages are at the beginning. They're signed by a couple dozen Texas Rangers. One being the infamous Capt. A. Y. Allee. I'm still in shock that I found it in a used book store. There is a book God. ;D

I recommend SAGA of a Texas Ranger by Jeffery Roberalt..... its a Novel but a Good Historical Novel which covers 1840 thru 1846 The 16 yr old hero's family killed by Comanches so he goes and fights in Battle of Plum Creek and joins Capt Jack Rangers. Many leading Republic of Texas Figures in Book and Historical events. easy reading like a Louis Lamour novel.. Got alittle time Enjoy.

Knowles' book is good with a lot of great photos and illustrations, but I haven't seen Roberalt's novel. I've got a hardcover of Ranger's Law by Kelton, which was signed shortly before his death. I haven't gotten around to reading it yet, although it's still in the read pile.
