Did anyone catch the HBO presentation of "Wounded Knee" last night? I missed it, but am hoping to see it later in the week. What's the consensus? Jim

I watched it, and if you get a chance catch it. It is revisionism, and as such, overstates the case, but it's really not too bad history. Probably, the worst misteps, were they did a horrible job on portraying then Col Nelson Miles in 1876, and mangled Col Forsyth at Wounded Knee. But, it's Hollywood so we have to have villians. Still like I said, historically it wasn't too bad, and I thought as tv it was entertaining.

Of course this was based on the Dee Brown book, but that book covered the whole White/Indian confrontation not just the 1876 campaign and the events leading up to Wounded Knee.
When it comes to the Souix, though, my favorite book is Centennial Campaign by John Gray. It is an absolutly outstanding book, imo. It's on the Army's "Recommended Reading for Professionals" and used as a textbook at the Command and General Staff College. Bob was lucky enough to know him, he's an author I would have liked to have met.

I finally got to see this HBO film, which I enjoyed. It was a top notch production, and was nominated for a slew of Emmys. It's been a long time since I read the book, so I don't know how faithful it was to that source.
