That's certainly the nature of the biz now, which is why I rarely go to the movies anymore. Me neither . . . that, plus the fact that most of today's younger actors and actresses are people I've never heard of.

And, like Baseball, who can afford it?

According to John Farkis´ book about Alamo Village and the making of the movie, and according to an article about the movie´s box office sales in the Alamo Journal by Joe Musso, the production costs were $12.000.000. The Musso article also says the movie made $7.910.000 in the first year of its release, according to Variety, but that was the domestic gross after theater rentals were deducted, not the world wide profits. The world wide earnings were 15.000.000 the first time around after the theater costs were deducted.[/quote]
My production costs figure came from "John Wayne and the Movies" by Allen Eyles, but I don't claim to know which figure is correct. My point, which I don't think I made clear, was that a gross of nearly $8,000,000 in 1960 was sufficient to make the film a major hit at the box-office, regardless of whether or not it recovered its production costs.

Neither do I! I remembered I had seen the $12 million mentioned somewhere, so I just checked up on it and posted what I found.
I agree! And it did make a lot of money as time went by and it hit the big screen again and again, not to mention VHS and DVD sales.

And, like Baseball, who can afford it? Isn't that the truth? I used to think a ticket to Fenway was outrageous, but going to the movies with your better half is almost as pricey.

From Kevin:
"Let me know if I left out any device driven scenes in the script. "
Don't forget, Kevin, that the women inside the Alamo would have to be known as "The Real Housewives of San Antonio", and the movie would have to be done in flashback, triggered by a paranormal investigation of the Alamo grounds to discover the "true" story. Oh, and don't forget the archeological investigation of the well in Alamo Plaza to prove that the defenders were hiding a Knights Templar treasure that had been buried there by missionaries who were secret Masons.

And then they cut all of Matt Damon's scenes out-right?
I always wanted Woody Allen to play Crockett and Marty Feldman to play Fannin...
