The San Pedro Acequia built in around 1736 by civilian colonists ran through the west side of the Main Plaza and passed very near the east side of the wall surrounding the San Fernando church.
Some questions:
A historical marker says that the ditch was "an open, earthen ditch--until the city lined it with limestone in 1852." I believe that other acequias of the same period were lined when constructed. Wouldn't this important ditch also be lined by 1836?
The marker also states that the ditch was about a 3 feet wide and 2 feet deep. However the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER TEX, 15-SANT.V,4) says the ditch was twice as wide. Who is right?
In 1836, how would the street crossings be done? Stone, wood, none? The HAER says that by the mid-nineteenth century, the downtown section was covered with removable panels.
