A plan to change one aspect of the Alamo Complex (not the Shrine, however) is under consideration. Stay tuned.

I had heard where The Daughters of the Republic of Texas wanted a new building at the rear of the state-owned Alamo grounds for library use, rather than visitor amenities.
Then last I hear was that they wanted to charge admission... but nothing lately... What did you hear??? Maybe I missed it on the news here!

Well the only other thing that has been in the last few weeks was about the upgrading of Alamo Plaza. Thats all I have heard unless there has been something else.
With the upgrading of the plaza I can just see the mess now.

With the upgrading of the plaza I can just see the mess now. The Alamo Complex and Alamo Plaza are two separate entities. The Alamo Complex includes all those buildings, both historic (pre-1836, e.g., the Long Barrack) and "modern" (e.g., the DRT Library) that constitute that part of Texas state property known as the Alamo. The proposed change concerns one of the structures that is part of the Alamo Complex. All the best. |

I just received a notice on the new Alamo events schedule. The DRT is responsible for the events below, while the San Antonio Living History Association
has all the important Alamo dates.
July 4th - Texas Statehood.
Aug. 18th - Battle of Medina.
Sept. 15th - Woll Invasion.
Oct. 13th - Seige of Bexar.
Dec. 15th - Battle of Bexar.

I have a problem with the word 'Shrine' in regard to the Alamo chapel. To me, 'The Alamo' is a battlefield monument, taking in not only the chapel, but the whole battle site. I feel that change will be all the harder to achieve when we burden ourselves with the word 'shrine'.

The term "Shrine" is the identity of the Alamo Church as known by all Alamo employees, DRT members, Alamo Rangers, volunteers and many others. It is part of the expression "Shrine of Texas Liberty," which has been used in countless references over the last century - everything from the title of a San Antonio Light newspaper article on April 18, 1926, to the 1938 educational film, The Alamo: "The Shrine of Texas Liberty." To be sure, the term "chapel" is associated with a place of worship, and the Alamo Church was certainly that. The term has also been primarily been used to identify the Alamo Church by those with a fondness for James E. Grant's screenplay for The Alamo. [Alas, the Alamo "battlefield" encompasses hotels and commercial enterprises like the various attractions operated under the Ripley's banner. But that refers to a discussion on another thread.] However, neither Shrine, chapel, oratory or church has anything to do with the proposed change to another part of the Alamo Complex.
